How to Spot the Signs of SAD

What is SAD?

SAD is a type of depression that usually begins in late autumn or early winter and subsides when spring arrives. Although experts believe that reduced sunlight plays a key role – disrupting our internal biological clock, sleep and mood regulation – SAD is much more than just a “winter blues”. It can have significant repercussions on daily life, relationships and general well-being.

In Canada, where daylight hours drop considerably during the winter months, up to 15% of people suffer from a mild form of SAD, and 2-3% experience more severe symptoms.

The Key Signs of SAD

If you or someone you know is feeling “off” this time of year, here are the common signs to watch for:

  • Low Energy and Fatigue: Do you feel drained no matter how much sleep you get? People with SAD often experience overwhelming fatigue, making it harder to get through daily activities.
  • Increased Sleep and Difficulty Waking: SAD can disrupt your sleep patterns. You might find yourself oversleeping, struggling to get out of bed, or feeling groggy throughout the day.
  • Mood Changes and Irritability: Persistent sadness, hopelessness, or irritability can indicate SAD. You might also notice heightened emotional sensitivity or frequent mood swings.
  • Loss of Interest and Pleasure: Activities that once brought you joy—like hobbies, socializing, or exercise—may suddenly feel unappealing or exhausting.
  • Difficulty Concentrating: SAD can impact focus, memory, and decision-making, making tasks at work or home feel overwhelming.
  • Feelings of Isolation: The desire to withdraw from social connections is common with SAD, often exacerbated by the colder weather and shorter days.
